There are various ways people can be hurt while machines are running, including impact injuries, electrical shocks, falls, pulls, and much more. The following three parts of the machine contain dangerous moving parts that should be protected:

  • The operating point: Injuries are likely to occur where machine parts are involved in cutting, shaping, boring, and forming materials.
  • Power transmission components: The machine components that collect and transmit energy to the parts that perform the work are likely to be hazardous if not guarded. This includes things like flywheels, belts, connecting rods, couplings, and gears, etc.
  • Other moving parts: When the machine is operating, all the parts that move pose a danger to operators. Replacing, rotating, transverse, and feed mechanisms, all of which move, are included in these parts.

The Best Machine Guards

Keep contact at a minimum: Guards should prevent the operator's hands, arms, and other parts from coming into contact with the moving parts.

Hold secure: It should not be possible for operators to easily remove or alter the guard. Safety devices and guards should be made from sturdy materials that can withstand normal use. The machine must be securely attached to them.

Keep hazards at a minimum: Guards should not create hazards, such as jagged edges, sharp shear points, or unfinished surfaces that could cause a laceration.

Reduce interference: Guards that limit the operator's ability to perform the job quickly and comfortably may be overridden or ignored soon.

Ensure safe lubrication: A lubrication procedure should be possible without removing the guards.

Plastic Guards to the Rescue

Opt for plastic safety guards. They are lighter and cheaper to ship, use less energy when produced, and are easily installed than cast-iron or steel designs. It's fantastic how well our plastic materials absorb the impact generated in certain areas. You could work on equipment making all kinds of noises - whether that involves drilling into chisels or grinding metals.

There are many types of machine guards, but many usually come in 3 main styles - Clear, opaque, or transparent. It is made out of polycarbonate, plexiglass, or PETG to provide maximum visibility while protecting your equipment during production.

Manufacturers mostly use polycarbonate material for making machine guards. Polycarbonate has many useful properties. It is transparent, tough, and durable. Polycarbonate also offers high machinability characteristics, giving it the edge to succeed at difficult tasks like making machine guards. When the food contact aspect is of concern, one can choose FDA-grade polycarbonate.

Some other materials that might be a good choice include PETG and acrylic. These guards are made to prevent workers from being exposed to ejected material or bits that break while working, thereby protecting them from potential injury. Also, they prevent contamination of products during production by enclosing them completely to prevent contact with other processes or machinery and protect them from dust, metal chips, or particles of another material.

Our PETG sheets can withstand harsher chemicals. This makes them an ideal choice for industries where resistance to chemicals is essential! For example, the oil industry will frequently require product resistance for petrol, kerosene, ultra-low sulfur diesel engines fuel, and hydraulic fluids. These robustly designed plastics can come in handy.
